Many of our clients also come to CERTA to learn study skills and habits. In our many years of experience, we found that many students who perform poorly in the subject areas or on tests do so not because they lack the academic ability. Rather, they do not understand the format, lack organization skills, or manage their time correctly. In short, students simply were never shown how to learn.
We focus on the following elements to help our clients become successful students:
- Test taking strategies
- Learning various test formats
- A disposition toward learning that encourages motivation and high regard of study
- The habit of Keeping a journal for developing study skills
- Recognition and identification of patterns and relationships for succeeding in math and science
- The use of annotation as a way to engage in active reading
- Developing the skill of jam writing as a means to more formal writing
- The learning of organization skills when taking and using notes for test preparation
- Focus on conceptual knowledge instead of solely the memorization of procedures
- Learning how to study for different subjects
